Six Charasteristics
The six charasteristics to identify a rock from a mineral are:
- Hardness
This means how well the resistance of scratches.
- Luster
This means the way the surface of a mineral reflects of light, for example the mineral could be non-metallic or metallic.
- Streak
This means the colour the powder (streak) leaves when a mineral is rubbed or scratched on it's surface.
- Crystal Structure
Crystal structure is a crystal that has straight edges, flat sides, and regular angles.
- Cleavage and Fracture
The cleavage part means the way a mineral breaks.
And the fracture part means minerals that are not flat, for example quartz has jagged sides.
